Coconut coir growing medium from Indonesia

Coconut coir is the fibre and pith recovered from coconut husk, the part of the fruit most processors treat as waste. Washed, sieved and graded, it becomes a growing medium with high water holding capacity, good air porosity and a structure that does not collapse over a season the way peat does. It is also renewable, which matters more every year in markets where peat extraction is being restricted.

You will see the same material sold as cocopeat, coco peat, coir peat and coco coir. The name changes by market and by supplier. The specification is what matters, and that is what this page sets out.

Choosing a format

Most buyers arrive knowing they want coir and unsure which format suits their operation. The practical difference is how much water and air you are paying to ship, and how much handling the product needs at your end.

If you are shipping across an ocean, compressed blocks almost always win on landed cost per litre of finished medium. If you are filling trays or pots on arrival with no hydration line, loose coir saves you a processing step.

EC, pH and buffering

Electrical conductivity is the specification that causes the most problems in coir, and the one worth understanding before you order.

Coconuts grow in coastal soils, so raw coir carries sodium and potassium. EC measures the soluble salt left in the material after washing. Our washed low EC grade is under 0.5 mS/cm, which suits seedlings, hydroponic systems and crops that will not tolerate salt stress. Our high EC grade sits at 0.7 mS/cm and above, costs less, and is a sensible choice where the grower is managing nutrition actively or the crop is tolerant.

pH across our growing media runs 5.5 to 6.8, inside the range most horticultural crops prefer.

Buffering is a separate step from washing. Calcium and magnesium are introduced to displace sodium and potassium held on the coir exchange sites, so those salts do not release into your nutrient solution later in the crop cycle. Our coir perlite mix is buffered as standard. Other media can be buffered on request.

Specifying an order: tell us the crop, the growing system, the EC grade, the sieve grade if it matters (3, 6 or 9 mm), the packing format and the destination port. That is enough for us to quote accurately without a round of questions.

Quality control and testing

Quality in coir is a measurement, not an adjective. Our coir peat is independently tested by PT Saraswanti Indo Genetech (SIG), a KAN accredited laboratory, with a batch report available per container.

Where a destination market sets its own requirements, we test to those instead. Australian imports require Salmonella and E. coli status for each shipment and we supply that analysis through Sucofindo. Tell us the destination market at enquiry stage and we will confirm what testing your import needs.

Every container ships with a phytosanitary certificate issued by Indonesian plant quarantine, a certificate of origin and a PEB export declaration. Fumigation certificates and ISPM 15 compliant packaging are available on request.

Private label and custom specification

  • Lead time: 3 to 4 weeks after order confirmation for growing media.

  • Container quantity: confirmed at quotation, since destination road weight limits vary by country.

Common questions

What is the difference between cocopeat, coco peat, coir peat and coco coir?
They are different names for the same material: the fibre and pith recovered from coconut husk. Spelling varies by market. Buyers in Australia and New Zealand usually say coir or coco peat, buyers in Europe often say coco coir, and coir peat appears more often in horticultural specifications. We supply all of these under one product range.
What EC level should I order?
Washed low EC coir at under 0.5 mS/cm suits seedlings, hydroponics and salt sensitive crops. High EC coir at 0.7 mS/cm and above costs less and is acceptable where the crop tolerates it or the grower manages nutrition closely. If you are unsure, send us the crop and the growing system and we will recommend a grade.
Do you buffer the coir?
Our coir perlite mix is buffered with calcium and magnesium as standard. Buffering can be applied to other growing media on request. It displaces sodium and potassium from the coir before the material reaches your crop, which keeps EC stable in use.
Which format ships most efficiently?
Compressed formats. A 5kg block expands to roughly 65 to 90 litres and a 650g brick expands to roughly 8 to 9 litres, so you ship far less air than with loose coir. Loose coir in 50L, 175L bagger or 1500L jumbo is the better choice when you want product ready to use straight from the bag.
